OC Exam Booster · Years 3–4

The OC exam tests how children think. We teach them how.

The Opportunity Class exam is one of the earliest high-stakes assessments Australian children sit. FunFox OC Booster builds the reading comprehension and critical thinking skills it tests directly starting in Year 3, when the preparation window is still wide open.

WHAT THE OC EXAM ACTUALLY TESTS

The OC exam doesn’t test what your child has learned. It tests how they think.

Understanding this distinction is the most important thing a parent can know before beginning preparation. Most programs get this wrong.

Reading comprehension

Complex texts across multiple genres. Questions require inference, author intent identification, vocabulary in context, and text structure analysis. A learnable skill not a talent. Children who have been taught how to approach each question type consistently outperform those who guess.

Thinking skills

Critical thinking, logical reasoning, pattern recognition. The questions are deliberately unfamiliar they test how a child approaches a problem, not whether they’ve seen it before. These habits are built over months of consistent practice, not crammed in the week before.

FunFox OC Booster directly builds both skills. We focus on reading comprehension and critical thinking the two components our students consistently show the strongest improvement in. And we start in Year 3, when there’s still time to build them properly.

WHAT WE BUILD

What FunFox builds. What the OC rewards.

Every session targets a direct OC exam skill. Nothing irrelevant. No generic comprehension drills.

Reading · Comprehension

Comprehension strategy by question type

Skimming, scanning, inference, locating evidence. Children learn which tool to use for which question and stop guessing. This single skill shift has the biggest impact on OC reading scores.

Thinking · Reasoning

Critical thinking built every session

Weekly activities that build analytical reasoning. Pattern recognition, logical deduction, creative problem-solving. Skills that transfer directly to OC thinking skills questions.

Expression · Writing

Clear written expression

OC requires children to justify and explain their reasoning in writing. Most programs never teach this explicitly. FunFox teaches children to structure a written response that communicates clearly, confidently, and accurately.

HOW IT WORKS

One class per week. Written feedback every session. Three full terms of preparation.

The OC Booster runs term-by-term, building skills progressively from foundation in Year 3 through to exam readiness in Year 4. Starting early means every skill becomes automatic before the pressure of exam term.

Term 1, Year 3 · Foundation skills

Reading comprehension strategy, question type recognition, early critical thinking activities. The most important term in the whole preparation.

Term 2, Year 3 · Deeper comprehension

Inference, author intent, vocabulary in context. Written expression introduced. Children start feeling the difference in how they approach texts.

Term 3, Year 3 · Thinking skills development

Analytical reasoning, logical deduction, pattern recognition. The habits that selective thinking skills questions directly test.

Year 4 · Exam readiness

Timed practice under exam conditions. Technique, timing, confidence. Children who started in Year 3 find this phase calm and familiar, not stressful.

Enrol in both Readers Club and OC Booster. A 10% discount applies to the second program.

QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK

Before booking, parents always want to know.

Honest answers. No corporate language.

The OC exam is typically held in Term 3 of Year 4 around July or August. Applications open in Term 1 of Year 4. FunFox recommends starting the OC Booster in Year 3 Term 1 or Term 2 to allow two to three full terms of preparation before the exam.

Not at all. Even one term of structured preparation is significantly better than none. Enrol now and we will focus the available time on the highest-impact skills. We’ll be honest with you about what’s achievable in the time remaining and build a realistic plan.

Yes and we recommend it. Readers Club builds the underlying reading comprehension and analytical thinking habits. The OC Booster adds specific critical thinking activities, exam technique, and timed practice directly aligned to the OC assessment format. A 10% discount applies to the second program.

The FunFox OC Booster focuses on reading comprehension, critical thinking and written expression. Mathematical reasoning is not a FunFox program. We recommend pairing FunFox with a mathematics-specific program for students targeting the full OC assessment.

Tutoring centres typically drill past papers and memorise question types. FunFox builds the analytical reading and thinking habits that make any unseen question feel approachable. Our students don’t need to recognise the question they have the thinking tools to approach whatever the exam presents.

The OC exam sits in Year 4. The preparation window opens in Year 3. That’s now.

One free trial class. No commitment. Let your child experience what building real analytical thinking actually feels like.
